In a democracy the presumption of innocence is afforded to the accused and a trial ensues in order to determine the truth of accusations based on the evidence that is presented. Not the other way around.
Our client, Mr. Igor Giorgadze, is currently undergoing a trial at the Tbilisi City Court in connection with an indictment against Igor Giorgadze et al. There has been no verdict as yet in this case. No judgment has been issued against Mr. Giorgadze that would either incriminate him or prove him guilty of any illegal act envisaged by the Criminal Code.
Yet Mr. Giorgadze is being subjected to a smear campaign that uses disinformation and defamation of character before any evidence or fact has been presented in court. Inaccurate, misleading pronouncements are being disseminated against Mr. Giorgadze through media outlets by spokespeople who make outrageous claims with no basis of fact.
While Mr. Giorgadze’s innocence will finally be proven in criminal court, the damage to his reputation in the court of public opinion threatens to undermine any exoneration he receives at the conclusion of this case. Therefore, we will not rule out any legal action that we might take against opponents and defamers in order to defend the legal interests of Mr. Giorgadze.
